The Witch From Milyagon ... continued

The riders looked at the basket. The stout one said, "Is that all we need?"

"Nay," said the witch, "You'll need more of this for the stomach. This is plantain. You'll need to brew a strong plantain tea for their stomach maladies."

"You will also need other herbs to cure them, chamomile and ginger root. But it will take a trip to the mountains to get them. And more than the two of you. I have maps to the herbs but I know not where the goblins and the hobgoblins be. You'll need some stout fighters and you better bring a cleric."

The Witch From Milyagon ... continued

The riders sped north pushing their now laboring horses to pick up their speed. When a neat little cottage came into site the two horsemen pulled their mounts to a halt and dismounted. The cottage was surrounded by a wealth of lush healthy plants. Some were loaded with blooms and others with fruit or lush green leaves.

The witch was harvesting leaves from a large plant and placing them in her basket. She rose as the riders walked toward her and held her hand up to stop their progress.

"Ici, healer." the man in the lead addressed her,"We need your help, our village has been infected by a plague."

The witch motioned him to step back."Describe this plague."

"The sick are unable to eat or drink. They are weakening and we will lose them if it continues."

"Then here is your cure," she said and handed him the basket.

The Witch From Milyagon ... continued

The two riders stormed in and swung off their horses. "We need help." they shouted. "At our village several women and children are really sick. Our wise woman sent us her to talk to the witch."

Everyone backed away a little bit. These men looked healthy enough but you couldn't be too careful. "The witch isn't in here." the leader said. "She lives a half mile out of town to the north. Take the mountain road."

The riders didn't even stop to eat. They climbed right back on their horses and went to see the witch woman. For the next 20 minutes they were the talk of Milyagon.

The Witch From Milyagon ... continued

The residents of Milyagon were accustomed to the Witch and her ways but those who had never met a woman with such powers were often afraid of approaching her for help.

On an early spring day a shout went up from the guards on the wall that there were two riders approaching the gates and they were traveling fast.

The gatekeeper, a stout man with a grizzled beard, hard green eyes and a sword in hand moved to the gate and peered through the peep.

"Looks like they be in trouble," he grumbled."See anyone chasing them?"

"None that I see" a guard answered,"but then there's a mighty heavy dust cloud following them."

"Open the gates but be prepared",the keeper told the two guards who moved to the gate to remove the massive bar and pull the doors open.

The Witch From Milyagon

No one doubts the witches potions. Her herb garden is small but immaculate and she knows exactly what poisons she's growing as well as what tea eases cramps or kills pain. She has been known to help girls after a rape and the legend is that after she took care of the girl she would take care of the rapist too.

Although she lives in a shack she gets paid well by the villagers for her potions and she has gold to spend on rare herbs. Some of the herbs she uses are poisonous in large doses and some can affect you if you get them on your skin.

When she was younger she used to travel to the mountains north of Milyagon to collect herbs. She has a map to places she used to collect and a list of herbs she will pay for.

Goblins and hobgoblins live in caves in the mountains and can cause trouble even though they have no interest in herbs. Occasionally a returning adventurer mentions trolls or ogres from the mountains but most people think they are exaggerating to make themselves look good.

The Conformist

Some people are just that way. Always going along with the crowd. Whatever you like to do, they like to do. They never stand out.

But Melvin carried it to an extreme. He stood out so little he was mostly invisible. I mean he wore the same stuff as everybody else. He even looked like everybody else. That's why I was surprised when I learned his secret.

He wasn't a natural conformist. It was just a cover. Underneath he was really weird.

Access Bollywood ... continued

"It's Arjun." blubbered Mallory "He's dead."

"Dead?" I asked. Arjun Mahabharata was the director and he was more than that. He bankrolled about half of the big Bollywood hit movies. And he had helped me more than once.

She nodded crying. I couldn't help myself. I hugged her and comforted her. Actually I was comforting myself. I needed someone to hold on to. My world was shattered.

"Oh, Dante." she cried into my shoulder "The worst thing is, he was murdered."

My knees buckled and I almost fell taking Mallory with me. We found a couple of directors chairs standing alone in the chaos and we both sat down. I put my head between my hands breathing heavily and she stroked my shoulders. Now she was comforting me. I'm pretty level headed but right then I was lost. I had no idea what was going on or what I could do.

In fact I was more than a little afraid. Arjun had always seemed indestructible to me and with him gone I myself felt very destructible.

Country Daze ... continued

So I wasn't the only one who saw it. The picture on the screen showed more detail than I had seen outside when I was startled by the light.

After the contact info they ran a video. It wasn't like an explosion and it didn't travel like a meteor. It looked like a geometric object with many faces and spikes all over it. It got bright quickly and then suddenly blinked out.

I'm not sure why I did it but I took my tea outside for one more look. Am I glad I did. It was really dark. My eyes hadn't adjusted so I had to walk carefully. When I got to my spot I looked up. And what a show!

They were everywhere, all sizes, all different like snowflakes. Some of them lasted as long as five seconds but most were there for only a second or two. Hundreds of them, white and blue white. And then they were gone.

I almost dropped my tea. I've never seen anything like it. I just stood there for five minutes waiting for them to come back. I finally thought I better go back inside and check the TV.

It was 11:15 when I walked into the club and the joint was jumpin'. The trumpet was hot and the sax was cool, if you know what I mean. The drinks were weak but whiskey is whiskey and eventually it started to work. I sat in the back corner surveying the scene. I saw a few hot guys but none of them were my type. Then Jonas came over and asked me to dance.

Now Jonas has been my on again off again for a few years and I thought he had finally landed with Millie but I guess not since I saw Millie draped all over some new guy in the middle of the dance floor.

I looked up at Jonas and said, "Why not?" as I stood to dance. It was then the cops hit the place and there weren't enough back doors to let everybody out. So Jonas and I ended up in the back of a paddy wagon on the way to the station. I figured they'd just let us go. We weren't nothin' and we weren't doing nothin'. Just out dancing.

I guess I was in for a surprise.

When we pulled into the cop shop I knew something big was going on. The place was loaded with more transports than I had ever seen before. I mean were they hauling in every jazz fan in the town?

As we sat there waiting I saw them pulling Jack Kumakis out of a wagon and hauling him inside. Why on earth was he here? Jack is a has been, I hadn't seen him in at least two years. Not to discount him, he's a fine musician, but he just can't keep his act together if you know what I mean.

The doors on our wagon were wrenched open and we saw three officers and a short chubby guy who looked less than happy to be here. He ran his eyes over us and spoke in a low voice to the cops before walking away.

"Okay you bunch, out of the wagon." the cop with the most hardware snarled. "Make it quick," he added.

I looked at Jonas for a clue, but he just shrugged and started toward the door pulling me along with him. "She with you?" the cop asked as we jumped down.

"Yes" Jonas said taking my arm.

They herded us in to a desk with a burly police sergeant sitting behind it. Jonas and I and Jack Kumakis, the washed up trumpeter. The sergeant asked for ID and we dug for it.

He read our IDs and made some notes in a book. Jonas and Jack looked like they had been through this drill before. I think they thought we would be released but the sergeant said, "You guys look clean but there's been some funny business going on at that club and we got orders to question everyone. Just sit over there and the detective will get to you as soon as he can. Been a busy night so far."

The bench wasn't comfortable but there wasn't anything we could do about it. Jonas took it in stride but Jack was a little jumpy. I wondered if he was up to something but then again I was jumpy and I knew I wasn't up to nothing. I started to chat but Jonas gave me a look and I shut my gob. Just the three of us, sittin' there not saying anything. I think that was the plan.

hairylarry 2018-06-22 at 12:27 Central Time.

I watched as more of the club's clientele were marched through the door and wondered what the funny business was. Then they brought Bobby "Beau" Brio in. I was shook. I leaned over to Jonas and whispered, "You see who they just brought in?"

"Yes," he said, then went back to silently watching the scene.

Feeling miffed I ran my eyes over the faces and realized that there were only a few I didn't recognize even if I didn't really know them.

Then I saw Cecile. What the heck was she doing here? Cecile Potter's father, Wayne, owns the club she considers a blight on her social status. I'm busy making all kinds of conjectures when she spots me. With a look of relief on her face she walked over to where I was sitting and squeezed in next to me practically pushing me onto Jonas's lap.

"How's it going?" I asked.

"Oh absolutely flippin great. Best night of my life." she hissed.

"So why are you here? I didn't see you at the club."

"They came to the house."
